Plateau itineraries: Bitti

The town of Bitti. Bitti is located at 565m a.s.l., has about 3,700 inhabitants and a territory over 20,000 ha. large. It is in the centre of Barbagia, an uncontaminated territory rich in natural attractions. The historic centre represents the main charm of the town. Here the features of an ancient culture have been kept almost unchanged, thanks to the work of skilled craftsmen who, with fervour and passionately, hand down the old local traditions. Even if the town economy is mainly agropastoral it is the craftsmen who constitute the true soul of the place and give a relevant contribution to the regeneration of old customs and jobs, like the art of carving wood along with the manufacture of wrought iron, ceramics and glass. They are also skilled in the textile sector, like the making of the typical Sardinian costume and in the production of typical food, like sweets and pane carasau, a true deliciousness to any visitor.

The shepherd and peasant civilization museum. This important museum, run by the co-operative Istelai of Bitti, is situated in the historic centre of the town. The museum is accomodated on several floors of a perfectly restored ancient house and presents the faithful reconstruction of typical rooms of the local tradition, like the kitchen, the bedroom, the room for the religious service and the one where the “pane carasatu” was made. Inside the rooms are still to be found all the objects and tools of the past, used for work purposes in everyday life, from the plough to the loom. Everythyng is still uchanged, in good state and orderly displayed, almost not caring about the passing of time. That is why a visit to the museum is all but compulsory and represents an opportunity to rediscover a historical, religious and cultural heritage which has been carefully preserved.
